As we head towards the perfect autumn, the chill starts to knock on our doors to remind us that it’s almost time. Fall is in full swing and the blue skies, hayrides, fall foliage, and Halloween events, with their many historic graveyards and ghost stories, add to the spirit.

Get ready for a scary season around the city and explore the haunted happenings in Salem, plan a dance night, or go classic with pumpkin picking.

5 best ways to enjoy Halloween in Boston

1. Trick-or-treating

The most Boston thing to do during Halloween is go trick-or-treating on Beacon Hill. The historic streets are a treat for everyone with their elaborate decor from Boston's toniest residents. Stroll around while enjoying the mayhem, and maybe pick up some candy!

2. Trolley Tour

Hear tales of the Boston Stranger, murders, and executions of the Boston Common, and the paranormal activities of the Omni Parker House at the 90-minute tour of Trolley of Terror. Walk through two of the oldest burial grounds in the city and visit the place known for the grave-robbing scandal.

3. Pumpkin Picking

Halloween can’t be complete without a pumpkin. First thing first, find the perfect pumpkin to showcase your carving skills. Head straight to one of the farms near Boston and pick from a patch surrounded by farmland and maybe catch a hayride.

4. Salem

When history and horror buffs combine, it means that October has arrived, making Salem the busiest during the month. There’s something extra spooky about being there in October and no one would want to miss the Haunted Happenings Market during the first, third, fourth, and fifth weekends in October.

5. Crypt at Old North Church

The historic Old North Church is creepier than it seems. The crypt below the Church offers frightening sight with 37 vaults containing around 1,100 bodies entombed from 1732 to 1860. Go on this dark and claustrophobic tour to light for Halloween vibes.

These historical artifacts have primarily come from Harvard-sponsored excavations in Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Syria, and Tunisia. See a full-scale replica of an ancient Israelite home, a full-scale reproduction of an Egyptian throne from 2550 BC, and a resin cast of the Dream Stela, found between the paws of the Great Egyptian Sphinx.
From the art, food, and music of SoWa Market to the thrilling action of a Red Sox game and relaxing ferry rides to P-town, there are a lot of things to look forward to. However, as you're aware, things are not quite the same this year, and our TVs, phones, and computer screens seem to have become the only source of recreation as we continue to fight the pandemic by staying indoors.

Thing is, that does start getting a bit boring pretty quickly. If you've been feeling that way as well, we've got some good news! You don't have to lock yourself in your home to practice social distancing, and there are still plenty of things you can do in and around Cambridge to break the monotony and enjoy a much-needed change of scenery.

Arnold Arboretum
Home to arguably one of the best lilac collections in North America, the Arnold Arboretum is the ideal place to get a closer look at the vibrant beauty of nature. Harvard's spectacular tree sanctuary is a sight to behold and presents a one-of-kind spot for relaxing outdoor activities like nature walks and picnics. The arboretum is open from dawn to dusk and entry is free!

Blue Hill
If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, there are few better ways to get some fresh air than exploring the hiking trails of Blue Hill. Just a few minutes outside Boston, you'll find a 7,000-acre reservation with picturesque trails that are still open. The scenery is breathtaking, and if you climb the Great Blue Hill during off-hours, you'll get an unparalleled view of the city skyline.

Boston Public Market
A great way to spend a day out of the house is to support the local purveyors of the Boston Public Market. Try some of the finest artisanal cheeses, get some locally raised beef, or grab takeout ramen from the Noodle Lab. Even during the lockdown, most of the market's goods are still available through the four-day-a-week outdoor market.

Craigie on Main
If all the outdoor activities have got you feeling a bit hungry, stop by Craigie on Main on your way back. Chef Tony Maws’ burger became famous when it hit the cover of Bon Appetit, and it remains one of the best treats for your taste buds in Cambridge. A version of that coveted burger is now available on the restaurant’s takeout menu, and of course, mace ketchup is included.

So there you have it – some of the best ways to have a good time outdoors during the quarantine. While things aren’t exactly back to normal yet, we are getting there, and soon you and your loved ones will be able to enjoy all that Cambridge and its surrounding areas have to offer. Till then, stay safe and stay positive!
We can think of no place in the US that embodies the Irish traditions and culture like Boston; after all, as much as 23 percent of Boston’s population claims Irish ancestry. Whether you have Irish pride coursing through your veins or you just want a reason to enjoy a pint of Guinness there is no better place to enjoy the rip-roaring fun of St. Patrick’s Day then in Boston and Cambridge. Here are some things to do if you’re here in March for the festivities,

Experience the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in South Boston

The neighborhood of South Boston is quintessentially Irish, which means that it’s not too surprising that Boston’s famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade would take place here. This parade welcomes up to a million spectators each year who are ready to show their love for all things Irish. On Sunday, March 15th don some green (so you don’t get pinched!) and head to South Boston for the parade, which starts at 1pm.

From amazing floats to live bagpipes and brass marching bands, this is a surefire way to get you in the spirit. Check out the parade route ahead of time to stake out your prime parade-viewing spot before someone else does.

Sample Boston’s Local Brew

Of course Boston’s very own Harpoon Brewery, nestled right on the waterfront, would throw its own St. Patrick’s Day shindig. This two-day beer festival, happening Friday and Saturday, March 6th-7th will be doling out their popular Harpoon and UFO beers, while beer lovers will also find delicious foods and handmade pretzels, as well as live music from Celtic-style bands. Come rain or shine, this brewery will be slinging drinks, so grab your tickets and enjoy a free brewski.

Enjoy a Live Irish Music Cruise at the Harbor

Listen to songs of the Emerald isle performed by the Boston-based Irish Band, Slainte, while cruising along the Boston Harbor on this relaxing 90-minute tour. Check out stunning views of the city’s skyline while dancing, singing and enjoying some delicious Irish-influenced food and drinks (whiskey anyone?). This is a great way to change up your typical festivities of hunkering down in a pub. You can also choose to cruise the day away with Northern Lights, which offers St. Patrick’s Day lunch and brunch cruises, as well. Enjoy some Irish libations, a traditional lunch and listen to live music while escaping the crowds.

Run the St. Patrick’s Day Road Race

Some people celebrate by enjoying a drink. Other people celebrate by noshing on some traditional delicacies. If your idea of celebrating involves lacing up your sneakers and going for a run then you may want to sign up for the annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K Road Race, happening on Sunday, March 15th at 11am. This race has been a city tradition since 1940, so get ready to put on your green workout gear and head out for a celebratory run before wandering over to the parade. Register online to be part of the St. Patrick’s Day Road Race where they say you “come for the run, but stay for the fun”!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at Franklin Park Zoo

If you’ve brought the whole family to Cambridge for some St. Patrick’s Day festivities New England-style, the Franklin Park Zoo is hosting its own all-ages celebration on Saturday, March 14th from 10:30am-1:30pm. Test your knowledge about fruit bats, tigers and other wildlife with expert zookeepers, spark some creativity at the arts and crafts corner, and watch the animals consume delicious green-themed treats in keeping with the holiday spirit.

Wander the Irish Heritage Trail

If you’re looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by getting to know more about Boston’s rich Irish history then the holiday wouldn’t be complete without exploring the city’s famed Irish Heritage Trail. This free festival will take place at the South Boston Maritime Park. In the past, this festival has had a diverse lineup of artists such as Albino Mbie, Pat Braxton and Grammy-nominated The Groovalottos. Take a stroll along the waterfront and shop local vendors or bring a blanket and find a spot to kick back and listen to great tunes all day long. Music starts 5pm on Friday, August 30th and noon on Saturday, August 31st.

This jazz festival began nine year ago as a way to highlight local artists; however, Boston is certainly no stranger to jazz. Famous jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and Billie Holiday came to Beantown to record, and Duke Ellington and Count Basie were just some of the legends that played at Roseland State Ballroom in the late 1940s. Along with the Roseland State Ballroom, Massachusetts Avenue was home to the Savoy Café (nicknamed “Boston’s Original Home of Jazz”), Wally’s, Hi-Hat and other popular jazz clubs.

Today, the jazz scene is still alive and well in Boston, with live jazz found just about any time of the year; however, Boston Jazz Fest is the only jazz festival in the city. Last year the crowd was so large that this year music lovers can enjoy live music for two days (you’ll want to get there early to get a good spot). Enjoy a little jazz music on a cool Friday night or bring a picnic and bask in the sun’s rays while listening to live tunes Saturday afternoon. It’s the perfect place to get your jazz fix.

Not only do you get to catch a glimpse of the school’s culture, but you’ll also get to see the upperclassmen dormitories and much more!

Catch A Show At The Brattle

This one-screen, independent theater attracts film buffs from every part of the state to partake in their themed weekends and screenings. The theater events often showcase artsy films followed by lively discussions with the directors or writers. It’s a great place to try something out of the ordinary and you can easily kick back and grab a beer on your way into the auditorium.

Harvard Square at Night

Other than strolling through the square on a sunny day, visit the area when the moon shines amongst the starlit sky. Harvard square at night instantly transforms into a romantic escape where you and your loved one can enjoy a delightful evening in the city. Book a dinner for two and dine in style on the top floor of a Hong Kong restaurant. Many other exciting attractions come out at night such as the Comedy Studio stand-up show or simply wander the streets with ice cream from Lizzie’s.

Grab A Slice At Pinocchio’s Pizza

Pen in a must-visit place on your visit to Harvard Square. Possibly the best pizza place in town, Pinocchio’s Pizza is worth every penny you spend. The walls are covered with photos of their infamous customers ranging from Steve Carrel to Mark Zuckerberg. Be sure to try their Sicilian style slices, big enough to fill your stomach for the rest of the day. Also, try their mouthwatering steak subs and walk off all the food as you explore the rest of Harvard Square.

Visit The Whispering Arch

There’s an interesting spot in the area where you can experience an acoustical attraction. In Sever Quad, there’s an archway within the Harvard Yard where you and a friend can whisper directly into the bricks for a fun surprise. Stand on one side of the arch and whatever you whisper can be clearly heard on the other side which stands approximately 12 feet away. Just like the old days when you pretended to speak through makeshift cup-phones, this is a telephone game you can’t miss.

Wander Through The Harvard Book Store

This privately own bookstore has been around since 1932 and ever since has been a name to remember. When you want to take a break from shopping, spend a few minutes browsing through the store and if you’re lucky - even attend a reading by your favorite author! In addition to a wide selection of books, HBS has its own printing press called the Espresso Book Machine, which can print books in the public domain on-demand. This place is for book-lovers everywhere

Stroll Along The Charles River

While you’re in Harvard Square, don’t skip out on a lovely walk by the Charles River. The best part about this is that you can get the added bonus of watching the Harvard Crew teams practice. Whether you see the men launch from Newell Boathouse or the women from Weld, it’s an amazing display of collegiate athleticism. There are plenty of benches lined along the shore, so grab a seat and cheer away!

A visit to Harvard Square does not simply limit to the above activities. In fact, there are plenty of places to eat good food and historical museums to visit as well. Staying at the Freepoint Hotel Cambridge even gives you an ideal location, as the square is a mere five-minute drive away from the hotel! Come and relax at our Tapestry hotel after a busy day of exploring Harvard Square and snuggle into comfort. Take this opportunity to gear up on the amenities you need.

Lastly, test-drive your plan. Send out a draft agenda and listen to constructive feedback by your peers. The first officially labeled innovation district in the United States, it was announced in 2010 that 1,000 acres of space in the then undeveloped Seaport area of the city would become the Innovation District. The move put Boston ahead of its peers across the country and gave businesses and individuals a space to create. Here’s what to see in Boston’s Innovation District.

TAKE IN THE SCENE AT THE INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART

This sparkling bastion of art, music, and dance has glittered in the Innovation District since it was constructed in 2006. The museum curates regularly changing exhibits and hosts concerts and speakers, but its view makes it one of the most ideal spots for sightseeing in the entire city. From the music hall or the outdoor back terrace, you can see Boston Harbor and the islands that dot the water. The new, seasonal Watershed location, across the harbor in East Boston, offers guests more space to view the ICA’s programming.

SEE INNOVATION AT WORK AT DISTRICT HALL

Innovation took on new meaning when this multi-use work space, the first free-standing public innovation building in the world, was opened in 2013. The building has workspaces, classrooms and even an area for holding larger events. Stop by Gather at District Hall, a full-service restaurant, and fuel up on dishes like Cobb Salad, duck tacos and clam chowder, of course!

SIP A BREW AT HARPOON BREWERY

Take a tour of the Harpoon Brewery on the waterfront and raise a toast with the locally made beer at the end. Stay after the tour and enjoy more brews from Harpoon as well as handmade soft pretzels in the beer hall.

TAKE A HIKE!

Hit the pavement of the Boston Harborwalk to see the Innovation District—and the city—in a new light. The linear park is actual 43 miles long, but you’ll see plenty just staying in the Seaport. Take in the view and stop to eat and drink; the Seaport’s food city has become legendary with restaurants like Committee, LoLa 42 and David Chang’s forthcoming Fuku.

The Best Winter Activities in Cambridge

Winter in the East might get a chilly reception, but those in Cambridge know one thing: It’s actually the best time of year to visit! Cambridge abounds with fine concerts and shows; restaurants and cafes become the perfect place to spend hours; and there are still plenty of outdoor activities to keep you on your toes. Here are 4 ways to keep busy—and warm!—this winter.

Gather Here Handmade Holiday Market

Crafts lovers take note: The Gather Here market is back for another holiday season on December 17 from 11AM-5PM in Inman Square. Browse from dozens of locally made wares—the perfect way to get your holiday shopping done—and donations collected throughout the event will go to the Somerville Homeless Coalition.

Ice Skating in Kendall Square

Let your inner Michelle Kwan shine through when you hit the Zamboni-maintained ice at the outdoor rink at Kendall Square. The seasonal rink is open mid-December through mid-March and is located off 3rd Street. After you live out your winter Olympic athlete dreams, grab a slice of pizza (or the whole pie) at Area Four.

Sip Hot Cocoa at Cafe Crema

Harvard Square is iconic in its own right, but Cafe Crema has become an institution unto itself. The Harvard Square cafe, which has served everyone from students to Presidents and Fortune 500 heads, dishes up delicious sandwiches and sweets and is the ideal place to linger over a steaming mug of hot cocoa. It’s located just across from the Harvard Square stop so it’s the perfect place to meet with friends…or while away time with a good book.

Etch a Sketch

Head to Mount Auburn Cemetery for Nature Sketching with Clare Walker Leslie on December 9. You’ll meet at Story Chapel but dress warmly to explore the winter landscape. The cemetery offers similar programming throughout the winter so check their website to see what is new and next.

But on top of the traditional personal ones—go to the gym more, go to bed earlier, eat healthier—we also have our eyes on promises that encourage us to travel and experience destinations like our home city. Here are the steps we’re excited to take in 2019 in Cambridge.

WITNESS MORE CHAMPIONSHIPS

This year has been an exceptional one for Boston sports fans. It began with the New England Patriots playing in the Super Bowl. Then the Celtics and Bruins finished 2nd in their division. And most recently, the Red Sox had a stellar season, winning more games (118) than any team since 2001, and ending the year as World Series champs. Our wish for 2019? Another year of success for our beloved local teams.

SEE MORE INCREDIBLE EXHIBITS

Boston’s many museums are constantly pushing the envelope with their thought-provoking exhibitions. Here in Cambridge, the Harvard Art Museums are set to debut a new exhibition on the university’s relationship with 20th-century Bauhaus architecture. And across the Charles, in Boston, we’re excited to see several exhibitions set to open at the MFA, including ones on Frida Kahlo, Toulouse Lautrec and contemporary gender-bending fashion.

DISCOVER NEW NEIGHBORHOODS

While staying with Freepoint Hotel in 2019, make it your goal to explore some of the coolest and most interesting surrounding neighborhoods. First off, explore all of Cambridge’s unique squares, each with a different feel. Next, venture over to Boston, where the Innovation District has become a national leader for creativity.

REVISIT THE STAPLES

New years are exciting because they represent new opportunities, new experiences, and new hopes. But they also represent a chance to look back at what’s still important. In historic Cambridge, we’ve got one foot towards the future and another towards our rich heritage. Celebrate that while you’re here by visiting, or revisiting some of the main attractions in the Boston area, from Harvard’s centuries-old campus here in Cambridge to Paul Revere’s house in Boston.

The crisp and colorful fall is winding down, and the snowy, majestic winter is on its way. Locals and travelers are exploring the city’s best shops and businesses in search of special holiday presents. Come check it out and treat yourself to a discounted Boston getaway by booking a stay during our upcoming Cyber Monday sale.

When you actually arrive for your boutique hotel stay in Cambridge, you can use the money you saved booking on Cyber Monday by exploring some of the city’s most treasured local businesses. Here are some of our favorites.

TOSCANINI’S ICE CREAM

New Englanders consume the most ice cream per person each year than any Americans, so cold weather doesn’t dampen our appetite for the indulgent treat. A seasoned gem of cambridge, Toscanini’s Ice Cream is hailed for its top-of-the-line scoops and espressos. This makes it an ideal pit stop for those starting a day, or taking a break from shopping and exploring the city. Takeaway gifts include gift cards, artisanal coffees and teas, and a number of handmade cakes.

HARVARD BOOK STORE

Considered one of the landmark attractions in Cambridge, the Harvard Book Store has been a popular cultural hub since the early 1930s. Those shopping for gifts in Boston this winter can find a wide range of new and used literature here, as well as a classic collection of Harvard University nic nacs, souvenirs, sweatshirts, and the like. Check out the event schedule before visiting and maybe catch a reading or performance.

CAMBRIDGE ART ASSOCIATION

The Cambridge Art Association is aptly named for its diverse collection of exhibits, programs, and events that help foster a community of brilliant artists. Spend some of your Cyber Monday savings by supporting the local arts scene. Right now the space is hosting a large-scale installation exhibit from a female artist based in Boston, and a 20-year-old exhibit called Red 2018, which is a series that celebrates the color with pieces submitted by artists from around New England.

WALKING AT FRIENDS OF FRESH POND

Friends of Fresh Pond celebrates and protects Fresh Pond Reservation, a 155-acre, wildlife-rich park surrounding an old kettle-hole lake. This pond is part of a series of bodies of water around Greater Boston that make up the reservoir system for Cambridge and surrounding towns. This land was sculpted by a retreating glacier over 15,000 years ago. The organization regularly hosts free events like nature walks and gardening at the reservoir, and they’re well worth checking out on your next visit. Consider a donation to this valuable group committed to keeping Cambridge’s natural environment clean.

MAUD MORGAN ARTS

Maud Morgan Arts is a community arts association for children, families and professional artists. The colorful building is an architectural marvel in itself, created by architect Prellwitz Chilinski in association with nine Cambridge-based artists. Inside, you’ll find a number of programs for emerging children and teen artists, with classes lead by professional Boston artists in ceramics, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. It’s also home to drawing sessions, workshops, film screenings, and other experiences worth treating yourself to on an upcoming trip. And don’t miss its boutique, showcasing the works of the talented artists involved with the center.

Cambridge’s Best Ramen

Winter in New England means hot cocoa, mulled wine and most definitely long meals over bowls of steaming ramen. Here are 4 places to get your noodle fix this season.

PAGU

Chef Tracy Chang’s ramen was known from one side of the Charles River to the other when she opened PAGU between Kendall and Central Squares in late 2016. The neighborhood spot (think a mix of family friendly communal tables, high tops for date night and cozy bar stools) serves up soft bao buns and Chang’s famous ramen. The Guchi’s Midnight ramen, named after her former pop-up, is the classic with pork and a six minute egg, but we also love the Uni Ikura Mazement with uni and miso.

SAPPORO RAMEN

Warm up over a bowl of the signature spicy miso ramen or the hot and sour ramen at one of Sapporo two locations (either at the H Mart in Central Square or The Sears Building in Porter Square). The noodle gurus at Sapporo create a ramen base so good you’ll slurping up the last sips. HOKKAIDO RAMEN SANTOUKA Ramen is the sole focus of this restaurant, where its signature items are the white tonkotsu soup (perfect for sipping at the end) with a red pickled plum and the shoyu ramen with roasted pork. If you’re looking for something to really kick the winter out of your bones, try the spicy miso ramen with three kinds of chili.

SHABU & MEIN

This East Cambridge restaurant’s ramen menu is bolstered by its extensive list of add-ons.
